The Story Behind Amped: Our LAB/OR8 Interview
News & Updates | Amped Berwick CIC
From an idea to a growing community music organisation, Amped has always been about one thing: creating opportunities for people through music.
Amped founder Darren Holleywell recently joined the team at LAB/OR8, Berwick's community radio and podcast project, to talk about the story behind Amped, the thinking that drives our work and the journey towards launching the first Amped Berwick Fringe Festival.
The conversation explored how Darren's background in music education and community development helped shape the idea for Amped, and why creating accessible opportunities for young musicians in Berwick-upon-Tweed is so important.
A key theme was Amped's ethos of removing barriers to participation. Whether someone is picking up an instrument for the first time, looking to develop their confidence, or hoping to take their music further, we believe opportunities should be available regardless of experience, background or financial circumstances.
The interview also explored the origins of the Amped Berwick Fringe Festival, an ambitious, community-led celebration of live music designed to give local and emerging artists opportunities to perform, connect with audiences and be part of something bigger.
More than just a festival, the Fringe reflects Amped's wider ambition to strengthen Berwick's music scene, support grassroots talent and create meaningful pathways for musicians to develop.
It was a great opportunity to reflect on how far Amped has come, share some of the thinking behind what we're building and look ahead to what comes next.
A huge thanks to the LAB/OR8 team for the invitation and for helping shine a spotlight on the people and projects shaping Berwick's creative community.
